Rebirth of an Old Course
In the past few years, most of you have noticed that several courses, including Belle Terre, 3 courses at Wild Wing, the 3 Bay Tree courses, the 2 Angels Trace courses, the 2 Deer Track courses and a couple others have closed due to redevelopment and housing subdivision construction. Some will re-open, but most never will. Originally opened in 1988, and recently closed in 2007, Eastport will be the first of these to re-open their fairways. It will now be called The Valley Club at Eastport.
The Valley Club at Eastport has been closed for almost 2 years and was originally “on course” – no pun intended, for redevelopment since 2005. The course should reopen in early 2009. Just driving by the course over the last couple years has made locals wonder what was going to happen to the course/land. Now, in the past few months, we have seen the course take shape and get back to being Eastport.
As far as the course goes, there have not been any significant changes other than the type of greens. Now The Valley Club at Eastport has Mini-Verde Bermuda grass greens. The old Eastport had bent greens. The other mentionable changes are that there is a new bridge on 14 and the bunkers have been redone. Over 800 tons of sand was brought in to refurbish the traps. This will be good for play and aesthetics.
There is a full service snack bar, like most courses in Myrtle Beach, but now at least you know there is a place to get a burger. Rates will probably be a little hectic as the new management figures out what to charge membership as well as package play. Keep in touch with your golf director for up to date rates.
