Wachesaw Plantation East's 3 Best Holes

Wachesaw Plantation East hosted four LPGA Tournaments and has been named the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owner’s Association Course of the Year, so the quality of the layout is strong. But what are the Clyde Johnston design’s three best holes?

For the answers to that question, we went to a man who has faced high stress situations in the past, Wachesaw’s head pro, Rob Mosser, a former closer for the University of South Carolina baseball team. Mosser faced the heat of our questioning and provided answers.

No. 8, 180-yard, par 3: Aptly named Watery Grave, a lake runs from the tee almost all the way up to an elevated green. Three bunkers loom on the right side of the green as well, but there is no room to miss left, because trees lurk.

One piece of advice: whatever you do, don’t come up short.

No. 17, 500-yard, par 5: A risk-reward hole, the 17th isn’t exceedingly long (470 yards from the white tees), but it has a two-tiered fairway and can tempt long hitters to go for the green in two. The preferred position is the right side of the fairway, but there is little room for error.

“There is a creek that runs in front (of the green),” Mosser said. “There is water on both sides of the fairway and the green also has a false front. If you don’t carry to the middle of the green you can roll back into the water.”

You going for it or playing it safe?

No. 18, 430-yard, par 4: Wachesaw’s hardest hole forces players earn a closing par. From the tee, the fairway appears narrower than it is. Just trust that it widens about 220 yards from the tee, but that doesn’t mean the hole is without challenge.

“There are trees on the right, water on the left, and the green is surrounded by bunkers,” Mosser said. “It’s very challenging.”

Make sure you hit the right-center of the fairway and aim right on the approach, avoiding a large bunker that envelopes the left side of the green.
